You will write a 2-page (double-spaced) Journal entry from the perspective
of your mentor. Imagine you are your mentor and you are entering thoughts
into a journal entry about your new intern (this would be you).
Try to imagine what goes through his/her mind through the course of the
entire day observing you work.
-What do you think goes through your mentor's mind as you walked in to work
this past Wednesday?
-What things about you do you think impresses your mentor?
-What things about you do you think you mentor isn't impressed by?
-What things about you do you think your mentor wants to learn from you?
-What stories about you do you think your mentor tells about you to friends,
colleagues and family. Tell those stories.

Journal Entry #4
I can’t do this from the perspective of my mentor, so I’m just going to do it from my perspective with my thoughts on what my mentor thinks about the work I do. I think that when I walk into the office every time I go to my internship no one really thinks anything special. I go to work with my mom, and we usually leave @ 6:40 and get there at about 7:20. We get settled down and start working by 7:30, all the way until 3:30. At that time we grab the mail and packages from the office and drop them off on the way home. I think my mentor would be impressed by how long I usually work, or something of that sort. I don’t really know. I try to do everything to the best of my ability, but I think my mentor isn’t impressed by how long it takes me to do things, since I try to go for quality over quantity. There’s always a LOT of stuff to do at the office, so I don’t always end up finishing the work I had set out to do in the day, and it carries over to the next Wednesday. But generally speaking, I get things done on time and I accomplish around 4 out of every 5 goals I had set for me for the day. I don’t know what my mentor would want to learn from me, but my mentor might want to find out more about the Workplace Learning Experience and exactly what the students at CAT are trying to gain from this Workplace Learning Experience. I don’t think that my mentor really talks about me with his friends and stuff, but I’m sure he tells my mom some things about the work I do and such.
Today, Kaid came to see the kids. When I first met him, I thought that he may be a little immature for the internship, but he impressed me when he came on time and was ready to get some work done. He was trying really hard to get to know the students. He especially did a great job at introducing himself, and the kids felt comfortable with him. A lot of kids felt like they could relate to him because he told them that he had problems with math when he was a fifth grader too, and gave them hope that it would be better. It was adorable because the kids were calling him Mr. Kaid and he felt a little awkward to the situation, but he told them to get rid of the “Mr.” and to flat out call him Kaid, just like a friend. This showed that Kaid was willing to not only be an intern to get the grade, but he was willing to consider himself a friend to the children. When he played basketball with the kids during recess and lunch, he would teach them tricks and when the tricks actually worked, the kids were really excited, and felt that they could trust him. I liked it when he took the students to the library and showed them visuals with a couple pennies. When the kids got out of hand, Kaid walked over near them, and respectfully told the children to keep it down, at least until he finished explaining what he needed to. The kids responded nicely, and not all of them were completely quiet, but they did lower their voices. The next day, students asked me about Kaid and when he was going to come back, if so. When I told them that he would be coming back next week, they were happy. I remember the next time he came, all the students remembered his name and were calling for him halfway through the hall. There was one student in particular that Kaid was talking to me about who was sharing their personal life with him. This shows that the kids felt comfortable enough to tell him things about themselves. At lunch, Kaid wasn’t lonely, because all the kids wanted him to sit at their table. To sum it up, Kaid has a wonderful influence on the kids, and he may actually learn something about himself while there.
and Kaid upstages me once again...
I can’t do it in the mind/perspective of my mentor, so I’ll do it in my point of view:
I have no idea..but I was ready to get to work on helping the 5th graders. I’m always on time and never late.
I don’t know what impresses my mentor, but what impresses on me by what I do is actually not complaining to the work that is given to me and I enjoy helping children out with their work. When I help out the student, I am also reviewing the work they’re doing, but I still remember what we had to do. I am also pretty quiet in a way that’s different from when I was a student in 5th grade in the same class.
I don’t know what isn’t impressing to my mentor about me is, but what doesn’t impress me about what I’m doing is…actually, I don’t know. I am actually enjoying what I do and interested in what they are learning in class.
I don’t know what my mentor wants to learn about me. There isn’t much to learn?
Umms, there was a time that my mentor was passing out graded tests and he was making little remarks about it and I was sitting and listening and I thought it was a little bit funny and I was little bit laughing and smiling and my mentor said I was the same like them back in the 5th grade. I didn’t even remember…

Journal Entry #4
Today I just finished another good day of work while having my intern here helping me. When she first walked in today I was happy and nervous at the same time. I was happy because I think this will be a good experience for her and its good to have extra help around the classroom. I was nervous because I am not sure I am doing what I am suppose to be doing as a mentor, I am not exactly sure what to have her do or if I am doing this whole mentor thing correctly. I wish there were more guidelines on what specifically she should be doing. Right now I just have her tutor students who need help on work and occasionally have her go around the class and make sure people are on task. I just hope she really learns from this.
Some things I am very impressed by my intern is that she is organized and wiling to learn. When I tell her what we are going to be doing today she reads the material to get an idea of what she should know. For example when we did the science rotation, before the kids came to school, she brushed up on pulleys and watched a pulley video to help inform her. Also she is very good at helping people to the best of her ability. When I tell kids to go to her for help she tries to help them the best she can and does a pretty good job at it. Another thing I am impressed by is that she is very good at following orders. When I ask her to do something she jumps right on it and is very helpful.
Some thing I am not too impressed by is that she is a little too nice. To be a teacher you have to be at least a little strict and punish kids when needed. I think she fears punishing kids or she just is a little nervous to do so. I have told her though to make sure kids are on task and yell at them if they are not. I think she needs a little more work on that. Another thing I think needs improvement is she should start learning when to do stuff herself. For example instead of me telling her that she should go around the classroom to check everyones work, she should just do it automatically, she should get in the the habit of just doing things. I shouldn’t have to tell her everything.
Overall though I think my intern is good. She is pretty intresting and I would like to learn what she plans to do in the future. I wonder what college she wants to go to and if she really is going to pursue education as a career. I am very glad to have her in the class even though sometimes I feel bad because I don’t know exactly what she can do around the classroom. Also sometimes I get frustrated because I am not exactly sure how things are suppose to be going but hopefully everything will work out.
I remember the first day she came to intern, there was a pretty funny but embarrassing part for her. I told her to go around the classroom to see if anyone needed help and to make sure every one is doing what they are suppose to, so she did. I forgot to tell her that one of the kids in the class is sort of disabled and she tried to help him. She stood there for so time trying to help him get his things out and when I realized what happened I called her over. All of the kids stared at us as I talked to her. I told her to not really worry about him because he has a special disorder and has extra help. I felt kind of bad for her because that was her first day and all the kids were just looking at her and they knew what happened.
The first thing I had John do this morning was work with the other interns Aaron, Brett, and Michael to do the morning inventory. So they go to the animation studio and take clay supplies tubs to hold clay, clay cutters, unopened boxes of clay, left over clay figures that must be broken down into guts and buckets to hold the guts and clay figure frame. As I walk them to the artist annexes I informed them that we will have a meeting to talk about their projects and see where they plan on going with them.
During our meeting I talked with John on his editing of Zeum’s Masters Winter Olympic video. I was checking in with John to make sure we were on the same page on what was going on. I also wanted to make sure we were on the same boat on what expectations I was looking for. John seemed very organized and on top of his work. During our conversation I reminded him to take notes on his process. John seemed on top and eager to get back to work. Before he could get to work he first had to have a meeting with Christian Norris who is in charge of Zeum’s Masters Program.
After John was dismissed and off to talk to Christian I began to talk to the other interns and checked in with them for awhile. Then I sent the Interns off. As I walked to my next meeting I saw John and Christian engaging in what was a great meeting. I saw John taking notes and taking whatever Christian had to say under great consideration. From what I saw it seemed like John and Christian were getting along very well and were well on the same boat.
As I was sitting at my desk I saw John walk right over to his work station and began working own his project. I was surprised John is usually full of energy and talkative. Today he sat in front of the computer and did non-stop editing. He seemed very determined to meet is deadline. O yeah during our meeting John showed me his own schedule and talked on how he was going to meet it. He worked for an half an hour straight and even started lunch late.
After lunch John walked into his station with intern Aaron and showed Aaron what he had done so far. A few minutes later Aaron was off doing his project. For the rest of the day John sat at his desk except for the occasional bathroom break and worked on his project. At the end of the day John was suppose to have a sample of his video ready and sure enough before the 4 o’clock meeting John was ready to burn his DVD.
John is a well organized intern who is aware of the expections given to him by Zeum and his school. He stays on top of all of the work given to him at Zeum and goes for and extra mile or two. It great having John at Zeum and am looking foward to seeing the result of his projects here at Zeum.
Journal Entry #4:
I feel that my new intern, Christine is always getting the tasks that I assigned, done. She is not someone that will fool around, instead she gets right to work once she comes in the office in the morning. I don’t have to tell her repeatedly what she has to do every time I assign her something. This is a good quality I see in Christine. I can tell that she is someone who is responsible and reliable from the progress of her daily work. If she makes a mistake she’s not afraid to correct herself.
I was impressed to see her resume on the first day and how she interacted. She has many good skills that will help her in the future and in this office. I’m glad that she has background experiences because it will be very useful. I’m impressed how she is mature and handles the assignments well. I feel like this internship will help her exceed other challenges or jobs she decides to take in the future.
Since she is still a new intern I can understand how things take time to get use to doing. I’ve told her that it’s better to do things slowly than to work fast and make mistakes because handling case files are important for attorneys. So far it’s not a concern and I think it won’t be a problem.
I feel that having interns, like Christine, is a pleasure. I admire how she is dedicated in focusing and learning new talents through this internship. I would like to learn about what she has gained and if she understands the work that she is assigned to do every time. I hope that she continues to do well as an intern and succeed in her project.
Hmm…Dana seems to be a really an interesting volunteer. She is very bright and really gives her all to understanding what our department is all about. I see that the nurses are putting her to good use. I’ve only see her sitting around a couple of times not having anything to do. In those times I always encourage her to go take a look at the procedures that are being done. I want her to really get a familiar of what the Cardio Lab is all about. I think she is shy sometimes because she doesn’t want to get in the way of what the doctors are doing. Ha-ha, I keep trying to tell her as long as you have free time the doctors have no problem with letting her view the procedures. I always tell her to also tell them what she wants to do for a career. By telling the doctor/nurses she wants to become a pediatrician they’ll take her much more seriously, because they know she wants to soak up knowledge on what they do during the procedure. Dana seems to be very on track to knowing what she wants to be in life. It’s really impressive that she knows what she wants to be at her age. I want her to get the full experience, almost becoming a med-student instead of being just an intern. I expect her to be apart of all of the things that go on here in the Cath. It is interesting asking her opinion on procedures and questions about what’s going on in the holding room. Dana is very insightful and gives her honest thoughts on how things are going. Chrissy (Head nurse in the Holding Room) always speaks highly of her. She says Dana is a big help trough the day, she works hard to make sure every last task is done before she clocks out for the day. I honestly was really looking forward to having an intern, because I’ve never really had one before. I mean Alison really pumped Dana up when she asked me to be a mentor. But I had no problems at all accepting the responsibility of guiding her. Really it is the whole Cath Lad Staff that teaches Dana about procedures, post operative patients, and reformed methods of treatment. We each give her things to study or to view, in turn she’ll be able to understand and do more things on her own. I appreciate being able to hear what people say about her. Alison and I always check-in to talk about how she is doing. Not to long ago Dana asked if she could interview me, of course I agreed. I feel she as kind of shocked when I told her that my biggest challenge in doing my job is the older residence of the hospital taking order from a young residence. I think she thought that things tended to go really smooth in our department. I think she’s an awesome intern and I can’t wait to see her project in the end. Dana better represent me well, ha-ha I’m just playin’.
Peace Out, Mizz Snoopy
Steve Wood introduced me to Tony a few weeks ago. I’m glad we have another youth on hand to help with everything. This one seems a bit quiet, but Tony has shown interest in everything we have showed him and he is always getting involved in what were doing and asking questions. He has been patient and co-operative in taking on new responsibilities here and has been moving at a good pace. So far I am impressed with his progress. And his awareness and abilities in and outside of the animal pens. I can tell he feels comfortable around the animals and doesn’t have any problems with restraints or tube feedings. A lot of volunteers sometimes have problems when they first arrive and don’t feel comfortable right away with holding down a seal or sticking a tube down a seals throat. Tony has shown that he can do both well and he hasn’t had any problems yet. I would like to know a bit more about Tony. What kind of background he has been raised in and why he is interested in the Marine Mammal Center and wants to intern here for his Workplace Learning Experience. I am happy to be working with Tony. He’s done very well so far and I know he will continue to do so. I can always rely on him to do what he is asked to and I can brag about him to the other crews who aren’t lucky enough to get such energetic involved youth like Tony.
So working with Tony has been great. Hopefully I have been a good asset for him and I have been accomplishing my goal as a mentor. I met his teacher once and he seemed pleased with the work Tony has been doing. I’m not sure if I am Tony’s mentor or if Steve is. Steve was the one who Tony contacted and talked about his WLE and mentor with, however I’m the one on the site with Tony and I’m the one watching and teaching him. I think that the real goal of the mentor is the person who Tony’s teacher can check up with and make sure Tony has been doing work and learning.
I can always use help around here so I was generally pleased when Ramona contacted me and then Ariel later on. I’m glad I have them here for the whole day and they can help in the morning and the afternoon with tutoring as well, it helps me out a lot. I’m not sure what to do with them, I feel like I have so much stuff to do, but nothing for them. They can’t exactly answer my 200 emails….maybe I can ask around other people and see if they have any tasks, thank god nobody has cancelled the field trips. I think they both have a lot of potential each in their own rights. Ramona is really good with the kids and tutoring and doesn’t mind being paired up with multiple kids at once and seems to handle them really well. Ariel is good in the back helping me with the book making and doing inventory, it was hard to pull them apart though together they are willing to do about anything. They really both do seem really chill and able to go with the flow, the first day they seemed a little nervous and I feel a little bad for not being able to sit down with them and have a little “meeting” but it’s hard to find any free time in my day, even to eat. Maybe I can have them pick up my food…then I can never leave my desk.
I was glad that they caught on fast and didn’t need a lot of babying, and when I didn’t have anything for them to do they went to the tent and organized the books then read them. It was nice not to have to watch over them like a hawk, ‘cause I have a lot of other stuff to take care of. I just wish I had more for them to do, I’m not sure what they can do so I really should make a point to sit down and discuss what they want to get out of this, that is if I have time. I should make a mental note of that. Together they can talk a lot and that sometimes slows the two down but otherwise that they work well together, Ramona seems to be the leader and Ariel doesn’t have a problem following her around although when prompted with something new Ariel is usually the one to jump at the opportunity. I’m glad they’ve been here before and they don’t need any tours and seem to be able to find the way around the place fairly easily, other then finding glue sticks and such. Not that I want them jumping all over the place and screaming, but they seem to be very lax and not eager I wonder if it’s because it’s their first day and they want to make good impressions but hopefully over time they will become more acclimated and wanting to branch out other then just field trips and tutoring, someday maybe.
Today I got a lot of work done and also a lot of help with the archiving project from Dale. I told him how to go about making the discs, and he seemed to have a pretty good idea of how to do it. He was doing a great job and anytime he had a question or something messed up he would come and get me to help solve the problem.
I feel that Dale is a good listener, and he manages his time well. Even though it takes a while to burn a DVD or to transfer the files from a DVD to organize it, he makes sure that everything goes smoothly and makes sure not to waste a lot of time.
A good thing is that even when he runs into a problem, it’s easy for him to figure out what to do and move on. This is good because there may be times where I am busy and can’t be interrupted and this helps makes things move more smoothly in general.
Archiving my work is something that I’ve been meaning to do for a really long time, yet there are deals to be made and shoots to do. Thankfully I can get this done before it starts becoming a problem. It allows me to pay the bills and make sure that if there is something that I need to check up on, it’s easily accessible.
I'll do this the best wy that i can..............!!!
i think that when i walk into that classroom my mentor is saying thank god and she problay lets out a sigh of relief, because when i am there i am a big help to her as she tells me so many times and she is probaly saying to herself that finally there is someone here to be like my second eyes and to help watch the kids when there bad and to help kids when they need help. He works so good with the kids and they all interact with eachother so well and im just so happy whenever he is here. I am so impressed with the way that he talks to the children with the way he handles the children and how he doesnt always take charge in all situations and he lets the kids have a chance to do different things. He is so amazing because he is such a big help when he is here. Im not really unimpressed about anything with him, when he's here he works hard and good with the children and I appreciate him and im sure that they appreciate him also. Im not actually sure what she wants to learn from me. I would have to actually ask her about that. I tell my friends about everything that happens throughout the days that he's here and whatever occurs during the time that he's here. But Geniually how is such a great and nice person.
