Write a one-page reflection on what you did this week (4/25) at your internship. It needs to be creative and interesting for teachers and mentors ro read. we do not want to know how long you sat at a desk or what you ate for lunch.
Wednesdays are usually the time where I am at Zeum and cut clay and restock guts. As the day slowly progressed the other interns and I were set to have a meeting. So as we finished up cutting the clay and washed our hand we proceeded to the conference room. As we got to the room we checked up on our individual projects that have been working on for nearly a month now. As we checked in about our projects I realized something. I was pretty much done. I say I was almost done because I just need to fix up a few things about the Zeum Masters winter Olympic video. So As I finished up with that which took at most a half an hour. I decided to type up the notes I took which did not take up a lot of time either. As I finished my final steps I sat at my desk looking into a blank computer screen and waited for my lunch. As lunch came and went as what seemed like 10 minutes I went back to my desk area and starred into the screen. As I starred into the screen I noticed in the corner of my eye my fellow intern Brett was struggling with his power point he was creating for his project as well. So I decided to see if I could be of any assistance. So the best I could I tried to help and guide Brett to develop his power point. That was my day at Zeum. I have come to the conclusion being a fast worker and coming in on weekends and breaks will have its downs. For example I was able to be ahead of my work but also ran out of work to do on my project.
This week at the marine mammal center, I arrived at 7 AM as usual. The first thing I always do is get my rain boots on and head to the kitchen and start weighing fish for the morning 8 o’clock feeds. This morning was cool because the first animal I tube fed was Tomar. I didn’t think I would be able to because she switched to hand feed the week before. Well she’s nice and fat so once we get her doing free feeds she will be on her way back in the ocean. As always after the feeds come the dishes. I set a new goal for myself to try and get all the dishes done by 9 o’clock. It was a fun challenge for myself even though I failed by 4 minutes. I got poor Ingrid all wet since she was rinsing the dishes next to me. After that I began to work on making copies of all Tomar’s charts and records. I made an exact copy of the files we use in the chart room for Tomar. When that was finished I helped DCF (dumb clean fill) the pools. Before you know it, I was eating lunch at noon. We then had to prepare for the next feed. Michelle asked me if I wanted to go on a release this Saturday for the fur seals. It seems like a perfect opportunity for me to get some footage for my project. I talked to Shelby and she gave me the spot! Ill be out at the Farallons from 7 AM to 4 PM. I don’t know yet why it takes so long, but I should get some great footage. Also something interesting going on today was that Astro the Stellar Sea Lion we have raised since a little pup was being released. I can tell everyone is going to miss him and hopefully he will thrive out in the ocean. Astro isn’t the only one leaving who will be missed. Andrew one of the volunteers just got a job at discovery kingdom as an elephant trainer. Hopefully he will be able to visit back from time to time. I also met an old returning volunteer named Mike. He seemed to leave some kind of impression on the other volunteers before he left. It was another great week at the MMC, and I’m looking forward to next week.
Journal Entry # 6: As usual, when I walk into the District Attorney building I would always get my bag checked and then head up to the second floor office of where my WLE takes place. I arrived around 9:30 A.M. and it turns out that my mentor wasn’t at her desk. Kurt (co-worker) gave me a clue that she was on the third floor. Jasmine and I had to stay in the office working on projects for the early part of the day. Being able to work on my project gave me time to manage it and think about what else I needed to do. We worked on different computers for our projects. The weirdest part of the day was that the computer that Jasmine was using froze and acted strangely. I tried helping, but the computer kept lagging. Then all of a sudden advertisement windows began popping up and they wouldn’t stop. The computer went crazy. The “x” button on the top right corner of all the window pop-ups wouldn’t work so none of them were able to close. There were no traces of the windows popping up on the taskbar like it was secretly hidden somewhere else. It turns out that the computer has a virus. We were afraid and unsure of what will happen next so we told Kurt about it. We just left the computer as it was and hoped that the computer technician would fix the problem. Afterwards I continued working on my project. I’ve finished typing out additional ideas for my subpoena guidebook. My mentor, Davonne, had scheduled me to work at the Record Room later on in the day. I had to help another lady in the record room document files. Jasmine and I had to make lots of boxes and pack the files in the boxes after they were documented. It was a nonstop procedure; files kept coming and were documented then put in boxes. The boxes were heavy after packing. It was towards the end when things seemed to be moving faster because of all the help from other co-workers in the office. Instead of us having to carry the boxes outside and make the boxes, other people helped us with the process. So it went smoothly and a lot faster. Internship days always turn out unexpectedly. I can never predict what will happen every Wednesday. But Wednesdays are always a day of the week where I can learn a little more about the District Attorney’s office.
Today at my internship, I was floating around in other classrooms because Mr. Mac’s class had to do the STAR testing in the morning. I didn’t know until the class was started and Mr. Mac said that they were going to do STAR testing in the morning and Mr. Mac assigned me to go to Mrs. Ko’s class to help out. I’ve worked with Mrs. Ko’s class the first day I had to go to internship. Mrs. Ko told me to file some of the students’ work into their filing folders. While I was filing, Mrs. Ko asked me about my cousin Preston because she taught my cousin Preston when he was in Kindergarten at Spring Valley. When I was done filing, Mrs. Cho who is Mrs. Ko’s assistant told me that Mrs. Wong-Lew’s 3rd grade class needed my help. So I went upstairs with her and she told me to color the poster she had made for the Science Night that Spring Valley was going to have. So, I spent most of my morning in that class coloring the posters with markers and paint. I also glued letters on the poster and cut out shapes, like a magnet and a sun for the poster. The morning pretty much ended up like that. In the afternoon (after lunch), I went back to helping out in Mr. Mac’s 5th grade class. The majority of the afternoon until school was almost over for these children, I was tutoring Michael and Brenda on math. They needed help on dividing fractions. I gave them problems to do and if they got it wrong, I would do the problem with them and if they got it right, I kept giving them problems. They had a few wrongs here and there, but we had fun. I even made up some problems and gave it to them to work on it. I also worked on it myself to find what the answer was. I think this is one of my favorite times at my internship, tutoring kids. Math tutoring reminded me about myself when I was in 5th grade and in Mr. Mac’s class struggling. I remember that I was terrible in math, especially in fractions and decimals. I had a hard time, but I managed to pass through it.
Let see… I was kind of board for quite some time, cause it was a slow day not that many patients stayed long enough to need my help. So I kind of made up this game. It’s called restock; I basically have to get out a number of supplies out. As soon as I start typing in the password for a cart the time begins, and I work as fast to replace all the supplies that are missing in each cart. I spent most of my time racing against the time, refilling many carts within the holding room. In the end it was fun trying to get in and out of the carts as quick as I could!!! There were many other constructive things I did within the day... Haha. I spent a lot of time getting to know the doctors and other nurses outside the holding room. They all had vey interesting personalities, it’s funny because I can see a little of myself in each of them. They’re all funny, they’re all goofy, and they all LOVE their jobs. I can actually see myself working there, they treat me like one of the staff and I appreciate them for doing that. I mean if I was treated like an outsider I don’t think I would like it as much. I’m just glad I’m apart of the team, I also get to know many of the “secrets” of Cath Lad. And as a member of the team I solemnly swore that I would keep the secrets they tell me to my grave. I plan on doing it to. We also had sort of a picnic in an office type of setting, I mean all you have to do is subtract the outside from the picnic experience and it still was tons of fun so that’s all I got for now.
Well what i do is i help the children with there math like i have stated in earlier blogs that my kids are doing 3 digit addition problems and 3 digit subtraction problems that look like 386+345= or they will have a subtraction problem that looks like 298-189= and they get a page that has about 20 of those types of problems on it. Theres children here that know what they are doing and then there is that group that doesnt really know what they are doing so then they come up to me or they call me over and what is so funny is that when they call me they say "Mr Gorgon" can u come help me i dont know WHAT im doing. So that gives me some laughs throughout the day. The kids just actually started learning how to do multipulcation there is still those that struggle with it but all you really have to do is give them like a lil boost of confidence and then they usually get it done and know what they are doing from then on. When i go to the school on wednesdays its usually the same thing but just new conflicts, and new problems (math, history, etc). Will looking at the different things that i had to do at the school i kind of thought about what my final project was, but then i could never actually say that i was going to do something that i was thinking. So i kind of put it off and then towards the latter wednesdays at the internship i had to say to myself okay its time to actually get a thought and start putting my ideas together and come up with the project so i kind of decided that i am going to do a comparison on what my old elementary school used to be like and how it is now since it has changed to a dream school. Yesturday what i actually did at my internship was basically help outside with all the kids and not a specific class like always. I was kind of like the P.E. teacher i was helping outside on the yard and playing kick ball with the kids and when ever there was a problem i was there to either help solve it or solve it. But the thing that actually shocked me yesturday was that I went to my class room in the morning and i was helping out and everything then it came time for lunch and the teacher was trying to get the kids together for lunch. The kids were so hyper and they werent really listening so the teacher took out her paper which has a list of all the kids that are staying in at lunch and cant go out to recess. So one kid got put on the list and so he got mad and tried to run off from the lunch line and so the teacher asked me to go get him for her and so they left out while i went to go and get him. I called him to come over to me, i called him 3 times then i had to go and get him and so i went and i grabbed his hand and he started to sock at me and throw a very big tantrum. so anyways, i was walking him down the stairs and he hit me then i grabbed him to take him to the office and then he kicked me and scratched me and then after all that a staff member came and helped and she got him to calm him down and he said to her and me that he hates me and that he doesnt want to come to school on wednesdays anymore and he never wants to see me again. So that made me angry and a little bit sad because i felt like maybe i really hurt this kid so badly that he doesnt want to see me anymore. So i was a little down after that but then when i went outside to help the other kids they brought up my spirit and i felt better. So then i had a great time after that helping the children playing with them etc. So thats the highlight of what my wednesday was like yesturday.
Today, as I went to my Workplace Learning Experience I was doing what I usually do as an intern. Today though, I was brainstorming about how I’m going to bring my idea of a website for my mentor, Mr. Heath, to fruition. So far, I’ve come up with a mental outline of the whole site, and I’ve drawn up a rough sketch of what I want the website’s front page to look like. I have also started brainstorming ideas for what I want the buttons on the website to link to. Mr. Heath said that he would like it if the website had links to resources, and a Frequently Asked Questions section as well. Mr. Heath told KC and I during the meeting we had that he wanted to have Frequently Asked Questions for the convenience of his clients. He also wanted me to have some links to resources that he and others could use. This way, he can focus his energies on getting through cases with his clients, instead of explaining everything over and over again to each new customer. This will lead to him being able to work with more clients in the same time period, which is beneficial to not only him, but to the clients as well. At this point in time, I feel that I’m pretty much where I need to be. I’m trying to get as much other work out of the way so I can start on the website, and I look forward to putting a lot of creative effort into the website to make it very nice, presentable, and readily available to use.
This week, I felt like I did some work for my final project, and actually work, and think like a teacher, that was because I woke up early in the morning just to write the quiz for the kids, while I was writing the quiz, I was thinking how teacher go through every time they make a quiz or a test because it wasn’t as easy as I thought. Making the quiz is very easy but I was hard when I started thinking about it, and how is going to be related to my assignment, and I had to make sure there is an answers to the questions that I made, also I had to write easy and hard questions at the same time to test their skills and know in what section and what kind of problems they have some struggles on, so I will work on it and make their struggles easier. When I arrived to school, students were taking a science test, so I was setting in the back of the classroom with my laptop organizing my chart so I can fill it up after they take my quiz, and I also showed my mentor the quiz that I made, and he told me it was great and nothing wrong with it, and he will have the kids take the quiz after recess. When the kids were done with the science test, my mentor wanted them to rest themselves and have a free time. I didn’t think there is any point behind letting the kids play around and take a break, but when I thought about it, the kids were tired because the test was kind of hard for them, and didn’t give them a lesson because they weren’t going to be paying attention anyway. After the break was over, we all had recess, and as usual we played, and all the kids had fun, and then after they went back to class, and I took the 4th graders to another classroom and they took the math quiz, and I also took some pictures of the kids while they were working, some of them finished the quiz early and some took them a longer time, but as a teacher I had to be patient and encourage them to take their time and do the best they can. When all of the students fished the quiz, I graded them and put the result in my computer, then students had lunch, and when they got back to the class they read 2 pages on from the science book, and played some games after, and that was it for the day.
today, unlike staying with the kids and watching them my day was split in hlf due to the fact that my final project was already to be started. at 2:00 pm i was thinking on how to get into the studio and if i were to get in what would i do? since i was really good friends with one of the staff named Thamahl Flemming he let me use the studio for a couple of hours. That was later. when the normal gym class comes in at two im ready to see what they have i store for me. the sport they were going to play today was called "warball" if you dont know what warball is its just like dodgeball, but its anything goes like headshots, etc (since we are dealing with fourth graders headshots aren't allowed). As i was watching the kids i was still thinking on how my final project was going to fall into place. when the 2:00 gym class left it was time for the 2:45 class to come in. while my mentor was bringing the kids back to get the next class i quickly ran to thamal and asked if i could have a few kids in the studio with me, i thought he was going to say no but he agreed to only three kids. so my next class of kids was alot smoother having that wieght of my back. at 4:30 pm i was granted access into the studio. i let the "students" have free time and when they needed any kind of help they called me over so i could help them. since my former mentor taught me alot of skills i knew all the problems excpet one problem, which i found out to be easy and i corrected it. i had the students make a project in two programs. the two programs were Reason, and Garageband. one student made one in reason(the more complicated software) and the others in Garageband. After the little "session" was completed it was 7:00 pm so i took my students back downstairs and returned to the gym where there were teams practicing so that means that there's really nothing to do so i just cleane the bleachers by taking forgotten clothes, backpacks, and what-not to the lost and found. when closing time came around there was only one kid left and he was waiting for his mom and for some reason i felt really bad that he ws the only kid left so i stayed with him until his mother arrived. i dont know why but it felt really good keeping him company because he looked bored and all alone. so yeah that was my wednesday.
