Imagine you are your mentor and you are journaling about your new intern. Try to imagine what goes through your mentor's mind over the course of the entire day as you work.
--What do you think went through your mentor's mind as your walked in to work this past Wednesday?
--What things about you do you think impress your mentor?
--What things about you do you think your mentor isn't impressed by?
--What things about you do you think your mentor wants to teach you and what they want to learn from you?
--What stories about you do you think your mentor tells about you to friends, colleagues and family? Tell these stories.
Your response should be thorough, spell-checked and at least 500 words.

I think my mentor was happy when I walked in to work on wednesday because she knows I'm always looking for something to do no matter how difficult or simple the task she's very aware that I' am ready and willing to help her in any way. I think what I do that impresses my mentor is how I share my ideas and my points of view of things with her, the way I work she tells what needs to be done and I don't complain I just get right to work, I also think shes impressed by the way I show up on time everyday and when shes not here how I go and help in other class rooms. I don't have the slightest idea of what my mentor isn't impressed by but I think this is a good thing. I think my mentor would like to teach me how to deal with a workplace like this for example how to stay calm when your co-workers aren't. If anyting I think my mentor would tell the story about me cleaning up the "big space" which the gym for children's village because I found a dead mouse and I'm sure no one else would have wanted to sweep it up but I did, and the fact how some of the workers here are afriad of mice to death so I can't say anything about the mouse here.
Every Wednesday when I walk through the doors to DonorsChoose.org's little office building, I am greeted by many smiling faces that are excited for the day and really happy to see me. My mentor would smile at me and say hello. Zak would ask me how my week was. He was probably thinking when he's finally going to be famous and get to be on my blog. Kelly on the other hand was probably thinking how much time I would save her by my arrival to help out with Donor Appreication Day. Otherwise she would be the one picking out pitures, sorting pictures and cards as well as cutting the gift certificates. I think I impressed my mentor by the speed at how I can organize feed back packages into folders and how good I can use a paper cutter to cut out the gift certifacates because she would always say "wow you're done already?" and things like "It looks good, you cut better than me." I also think that my mentor is impressed by the work I do and how I don't ask many questions which means that I understood everything she told me to do and I don't really need much help doing many of the tasks that has been assigned. Only one demonstration and I would be ready to work without question until I finish. I think that she is not impressed by the carelessness I cut one of the gift certifacates cutting off the ty in oppurtunity because now I created a little more work on her part. Another trait that might not impress my mentor would be how little I talk. She talks a lot, but I wonder how much it bugs her that I don't talk that much and is pretty quiet. I think my mentor wants to teach me how to write a paper with directions on how to do an event for Donors Appreciation Day, but I forgot what that was called. I think she might want to learn how to be a good mentor because I think this was her first mentor so I'm going to be an experiment on how to be a good mentor. I think my mentor tells good stories about me and how I work. She would tell Becky how much better I can cut with a paper cutter than she can and also how fast of a worker I am. I also think she would say something like how much time I save her and how much work she would also have to do if I was not there, but then she might not have to create a plan every Wednesday either.
well, usually, when i walk into the chibi-chan gate, i am there before my mentor because he starts work at 9:30 when i'm already there at like 8. but there is a teacher there in the morning that i think really trusts me so far because of the things she lets me do when shes busy or when she has to take care of a kid. when i get there, she usually gives me the phone to answer the phone calls and also if she walks away to another classroom, she would tell me to keep and eye on the kids which makes me feel that she has a lot of trust in me. when my mentor does get here though, he sees me playing with the kids to get them out of trouble, sometimes provide them with snacks in the morning like cereal or toast, or help them out during circle time in the mornings. so i guess you can say that he thinks i have some experience with kids because of my past experience. i'm not sure about what my mentor is not impressed by because he always seems to be having fun or kind of messing around himself. i always see him having fun and sometimes messing around with the students so i sometimes play around with the students too by maybe telling them that they are wearing a pink dress or a white shirt when they're really not wearing that color. but they usually dont believe because they are so used to my mentor playing around with them. ever since KC has been to my WLE site and told my mentor that i'm not good at presenting to a group of people, my mentor has been asking me everytime after the day what i've been learning and if i dont tell him what have learned on that day, he wont sign the sign off sheet that shows how many hours i worked in a day and what i did on a daily basis. mostly, he wants me to learn something different every single day that i am there because he thinks that if i learn something new every day, i can learn faster and get used to the things that the kids do everyday and see how they learn and what they do. stories that my mentor probably tell are to Shana, which is the director of chibi-chan and as his boss, i think that he tells Shana what i have done on a daily basis and what i did good and what i did bad on. he would probably tell her that i am a good person who can solve problems when kids are having fights. once, at the sandbox, a kid through a ball at another kid's head and when i got there, the kid was already crying and i had to tell the kid who threw the ball to apologize and not do that again. another time that i resolved a problem was when kids were arguing to who could be gabriella from high school musical, i told them that everyone had to take turns and after 5 mins, they would have to switch rolls. mostly, i think that he would say i help out a lot for the time that i am there.
As always I walked in late and Ace was already sitting there about to start doing some work on the computer for Sue, luckily I was not ready to start working yet so when he finished a few minutes later we started. The First thing we had to do was get some lumber to complete the baffles. I know its not fun for Ace, to do this kind of work but it needs to be done our studio is really only 95% complete and we have so many artists coming in we need to get the other 5% complete. He is still learning a lot from doing all this work building, he is learning what actually goes into a recording studio and how it gets sound proofed. I could tell he was kind of tired today because we did not talk much and as we were walking to the lumber yard and walking around the lumber yard, he was a few steps behind me the whole time and did not say much at all. Once we left the lumber yard I realized we didn’t have the right screws, so I sent him back. He did exactly what I said, just like he did all day. We ended up having to go to home depot to get the screws because the lumber yard didn’t have the right ones. Me and Ace had a good conversation about his school and his family. On the way back it was kind of funny when I said I started working for your dad in 1991 and Ace said that was the year he was born. I told him I remembered when he was born and we both said, Jesus, and I said time goes by really fast. Once we got back we finally started making the baffles, which was pretty hard and we came across a lot of problems for such a simple task. None of these problems were because of Ace or me. Ace did exactly what he was supposed to do and did a good job of it. He always does exactly what he needs to do and if he doesn’t understand something he will ask to make sure he is doing it right. I am always telling him that the only way he can really learn how to do all this stuff is to just go ahead and jump right in and do it. I think he understands that, even though he doesn’t always do this and makes sure he is going to do it right before he jumps in. Which is a good quality to have because working in this place it is easy for anyone to mess something up. Ace is learning a lot really fast and I think I am too. Teaching people is not an easy thing to do. At the start I didn’t really explain myself that well when I was doing something and Ace had to ask questions so he could learn what I was doing. But already I have learned to be able to explain what I am doing well and make sure he understands. I think by the end of this Internship Ace will have helped community musician out a lot and all 4 of us (including Brian and Sue) will have learned a lot.
I was in hawaii for a wedding, so luckily i didn't even have to see max!
I was in a large meeting when Ian walked in today. He didn’t really notify me and he had his advisor with him. Ian had already given him a tour of the office and a brief summary of what was the company mission statement. We sat down and discussed what was going to be the final project for this internship. I thought his advisor was nice and normal, but later Ian told me he was eccentric and way less chill than when I met him. I gave Ian some work to do while I finished the meeting and he got that done fast. He has been mostly gathering photos that need to be resized for different placement on the site. The images are always relating to an article on the site and it is a time consuming effort. He’s able to get through quite a few of these in a day and do some other pieces. Ian also has a good eye when it comes to what is a good picture and what is not. Rarely does he pick out a picture that isn’t appealing to the eye and the after the first time I told him that none of the images could include meat, he immediately filtered out images with meat. He did very well on the first interstitial he did a few weeks ago. I wish he would communicate to me a little more when he is done with his work so that he isn’t sitting around. I would like to move on to teaching him more of the designing and placement of our web pages. He’s helping with small tedious tasks, but I want to teach him more on how to create a full page. Ian says he still hasn’t played whom he was supposed to in the office pool tournament, he’s holding up the whole thing. Ian also seems to like the EA burger at the EA Games cafeteria. He gets it pretty often, and eats the whole thing (because they’re good and I’m hungry!) Overall, he’s a good worker though. Even though he can get into small lulls part way, but then he’ll jump back on task.
hi kc
When Isis walked in today, i had this feeling that she was really enjoying her time here at C5. I can tell its one of her passions to work with kids because the minute she walks in, all of the kids run up to her greeting her and all you would see is a smile on her face. The thing i love about her is that she is always willing to do what ever it takes to get the job done. Working with children is not an easy job, and i can really see that this is something that she loves to do. She has become accustumed her job here at C5, and she fits right in as if she was an original staff member. Anything that i may not be able to do, she is always there to help me out. The kids really enjoy her presence. Today she helped us with one of the children who was having a problem listening and participating. She was able to mediate the conflict, and make the kids feel comfortable and practice on improving their behavior. She even brought us yummy doughnuts fro the staff room. Today she helped the kids make their costumes for their project time. She always brings nw ideas to the program and she even gave me suggestions on my classroom design. When ever we have a problem or do things a certain way, it only takes Isis one time to learn. If she doesnt do it the way we would normally do, we just tell her one time and then she has it down. She got her picture taken so she can get in the building with out going through the detecter. We wanted to make her feel comfortable like a staff ehre at C5. Isis is an asset to the C5 community and i couldnt imagine how the kids would react when her time at C5 will end.
I wasn’t able to come in to the office today to see Sarah Jane in the workplace, but I have talked to her a couple of times on the phone. Once in a while, we checked in with each other to clarify some things and to ask each other questions about the work she has been doing.
I am so grateful that Sarah has the opportunity to help us out at Bethel, especially since Marcos and I have school to juggle, as well. Although Sarah’s requirement is to come in only on Wednesdays, she is very much a part of our team on Friday nights where she participates in the youth group and also teaches a graphic art and design class to a small group of ninth through twelfth graders every first, third, and fifth Fridays of the month during Ignite Afterhours. Like always, she comes to church on Sundays and gets to see the work she has done in action. For example, if she works on the Keynote presentation for the sermon that week with Jym, the whole congregation views it that Sunday. Her peers are aware of the work she has been doing, and we all support her in all that she does to put youth perspective into the Multimedia at our church.
Since Sarah started coming in on Wednesdays, she has taught Marcos and I a lot of little tricks on the Macs we use at church. Each of these little things have, in some way, enhanced our work flow and even fixed some of our technical problems. I am amazed at how much Sarah knows about Macs and Apple software. She recently helped me make the switch from Microsoft PowerPoint to Keynote, which I now use for school presentations.
I have suggested keeping an Agenda where she can write down all the things she needs to accomplish and how to prioritize these things in her daily/weekly/monthly schedule. She has been using hers, which is good. For a person like me, who is involved in a lot of things, it’s important to have something that helps organize your life.
I am very excited about our upcoming event Heritage Night, which will be held on March 16. It is a social event for our church that is meant to teach the older and younger generations about each other. The youth and college departments will be putting this together, and Sarah, Jym and Roland are in charge of putting the video segment together. Jym and Roland have come up with some awesome videos in the past and Sarah is so interested to learn from them. I have no doubt they will put something together that will be professionally comedic and appreciated by people of all generations in our church.
I know Sarah is learning all that she can, even when she cannot receive direct guidance from me. She has been very resourceful – reading books, watching training videos, and going through online tutorials for certain software. I hope she will walk away with the skills she wants to acquire during this experience.
some thing my mentor told that she liked about me was that im her height so she doesnt have to keep bending over when she talks to people and the kids. also that the parents like me and that the kids do and i have a good personality. alot of the parents think im good with the kids which is true haha. i think they think i really really enjoy the kids even tho some days i can be very angry with the kidsa but i get over it. i think my mentor may talk to the other adults and telll them im good with the kids because the parents always want me to watch over their kids or help where there are alot of kids and i handle it well and i like how they trust me with the kids because it makes me feel as if i am the key to their problems.
Well I don't really know what goes on in my mentors head because it doesn't feel like i'm around her that much. I'll try to imagine though. This past Wednesday as I walked into work my mentor was on the phone but when she seen me she was probably thinking oh man I have to get off of the phone because I don't think she's going to know what to do. I did know what to do and as soon as I started working she probably had a second thought which was "She's actually learning something and I didn't have to tell her what to do." Something about me that I think impressess my mentor is that I always get the work giving to me done. Something about me that I think my mentor isn't impressed by is that I'm quiet when I'm in her office and I really don't talk that much. The only time that I really talk is when I first come in and say hi, when i'm asking her what she wants me to do next, and when I'm leaving and saying bye or see you later. I think my mentor wants to teach me more of how to be a self-starter. I really just don't know what my mentor would want to know more about me. I don't think my mentor talks to her friends and family about me becasue their is other interns there that works with her and I don't think she is going to spend her time talking about us to her family and friends because i'm sure she has more exciting things to talk about. I can picture her having a conversation with her colleagues. I can picture this because sometimes she sends me upstairs to work with other people. The coversation I can picture is her asking them does Tiffany work well? Also, Does she get the work you give her done? Thats the only thing I can think of. I can't think of anything else worthwhile because I don't really communicate with her that much.
Wow, Sean Schafranek looks so professionally dressed. He must realize how hard it is to look your best while working at a pre-school. You have to dress with confidence and style, while still being comfortable and not too ashamed when your cloths get paint and/or mashed potatoes and gravy on them. And also what a gentleman! He is so polite and willing to lend a hand when I need something. He reminds me so much of his sister, it is amazing. Their mother raised those Schafranek children right.
I am also so impressed my how easily the students accepted him as a teacher. He is small but direct and authoritative when solve problem resourcefully. The kids just love him when he is playing games with them on the sand. “Seanie Boy!” is what one coyote student Raia
Calls him. Pretty soon he should spend all of his Wednesday in one classroom. I hope that he will be able to work this summer because I could really use his experience.
However, he isn’t perfect. He needs to improve the way he acts in the classroom. He is still learning how to set boundaries and limits with the kids. Sometimes it isn’t time to play with a student inside when they should be doing a certain activity. He is also developing supervising skills that transcend the classroom. He is sometimes tentative when he is a disciplinary.
I think that I want to teach him more self-confidence. It is easy to bow your head down and do a task given to you. It takes skill to direct kids to make their own conclusions in a given situation. I want to be more of an observer and help to the kids and less of a subservient to the teachers and sometimes the students as well. I want to learn how to be so outrageously funny and charming as he is. Maybe if I ask him to construct a lesson for the kids it would be about expressing ones self creatively. He’s mentioned that he is a stage actor.
My favorite story about Sean that the kids love to here, is about when Sean was a student at Pacific Primary. It was my second or third year as director of the school and Sean was a cute little rainbow dolphin just like his sister was. Well, so Sean and the rainbow dolphins were just starting the New Year, and they were creating a list of classroom rules. Sean, who was at the time the lead teacher of the class, called on the student Sean who was eagerly raising his hand. When Sean gives out his rule he says, “No , um, no cigar smoking allowed!” All the teachers got a kick out of it and I still tell that story to anyone who knew Sean when he was a kid.
It think one of the things that came up a lot in her mind is the fact that I'm dedicated to learning something she has dedicated her whole life to. Another thing I believe she noticed is that I also love the art and beauty of cake decorating because I try to be perfect with every design she has realized that I want to do it right and make sure I remember how to do it. I think she believes that I'm very happy being at the bakery and I think she can see that in my body language and in the way I am when I step into work on Wednesdays that I love smelling cake and decorating it too. I think she's impressed by the fact that I'm there every Wednesday 10 before I'm supposed to start, and also the fact that I'm working there because I want to decorate cakes when I grow up and do that the rest of my life just like she is. I don't think she's unimpressed with anything I've done because she’s looked forward or helped me move forward and tell me what I’ve done wrong so I can make it better. I would love to learn everything she knows and learn how to not make the mistakes she has possibly made in the past. I think she probably tells people she knows about the how I want to be in her shoes in a couple years and do what she’s doing and become as famous or well known as her and just be as creative as her once I graduate college.
Today when Owen walked in to work I thought about how him and Max are hard workers and realized that I was going to have a hard time finding work for them to do. They finish projects and tasks so quickly that theres always a shortage of things for them to do around the shop and so new things are always welcome. I got them started on sorting AC/DC adapters and then gave them a written task sheet so they could have work the entire day. This worked out great and they had the whole day full of work ahead of them, they even managed to clear up and get all of the broken/stripped recycling computers bunched up in the corner so they weren't spilling out over the back room/closet. All-in-all I think that it was a good and productive day, and next week should go well too if these task sheets work out.
