As your teachers have gone for visits to the various workplace sites of students, we have seen students doing work that relates to a bigger picture or larger task that will benefit the workplace or the company.
Please describe in detail the work that you have currently been engaged in and how that work relates to the larger whole of the workplace you are currently involved with.
In addition, have you decided on a project for your WLE? If so, please describe what your plan is for your final project. If you have not thought about a project, please explain what possibilities exist and which one(s) interest you the most.
Finally, having a theme or essential question will help you bring your project together. What would you say is the theme of your internship so far?

So far in my WLE experience I have worked on re-designing templates for some of the "old-fashioned" bulletin inserts and forms, proof-read bulletins, installed new software on computers, and worked with people in the office to help get the right information out in creative ways (i.e.: posters, promotion cards). One of the projects I work on on a weekly basis are the Keynote presentations, which are partnered with the sermons on Sunday mornings. These are important because they help the congregation follow along with the sermon and provide answers to the fill-in-the-blank notes printed in the bulletin. Through the collaboration with the Creative Tech team, I learned the art of making Keynotes that clearly represent what a pastor/speaker is trying to convey in his message...Bethel style.
Every Wednesday, Jym and I both get an email from Ed who creates the skeleton of the Keynote, containing the PowerPoint file. Jym transfers everything to Keynote, using fonts that are clear and can be read from the big screens. We then both go through the image archives and research on the internet for pictures that are a great match for the text. Occassionally, we will purchase pictures from iStock Photo if we think they are worth it. Jym is pretty picky about these, and so am I, so we are always determined to find the best ones we can. If it's not a perfect match, we'll find one that is.
More recently, I have been focusing on my WLE project. I am currently putting together a video about the church's roots, which will be shown on Heritage Night. This event on March 16 is supposed to help people of all generations in the church get to know more about each other. The video will be a collection of interviews from various people in the congregation. Last Wednesday Cindy, my mentor, contacted people to interview and by Wednesday night we were filming the 5-question interviews using my HD camera. I came in early to youth group on Friday night and filmed a couple more interviews as well as some scripted footage, which I will edit into a clip entitled "Upgrade My Pastor" - a parody of "Pimp My Ride." Our last day of shooting was on Sunday at church when most of our interviews were filmed. I have to say we got some pretty good answers from people. There's no doubt the final product will be a funny and heartfelt at the same time.
Today, I met with Jym and Cindy to talk about which parts of the interviews we wanted to include, the order, and transitions. I still have a lot of editing to do and should have a good edit of the project by Friday night. On Saturday, we will make all the finishing touches. It will be a lot of work, but I'm sure it will pay off come Sunday evening.
I had talked to KC about this project earlier and am not sure if he is still thinking about having some students come to the event and evaluating people's reactions to the video. I think it'd be cool to see what some outsiders think.
A good essential question for my WLE is probably:
How can the church of today use Multimedia as a tool to bring people together and educate them in a way God intended? It is a broad question, but I think it very well embodies the main purpose of Bethel's Multimedia Dept. and I am very proud to say I have been a part of that process, even if it will only be for a short while.
Overtime, my experiences here at C5 have been a series of tasks. I think majority of it is experience in which i get to learn how to communicate with children. I think its more to my experience then just
learning how to interact with the children. However, i have been thinking about the curriculum, and the structure of C5, and thinking about incorperating it into my project. Some of the other things i have been involved with at C5, is helping out my mentor with her personal class. I have been helping her design her classroom. She has to design her own classroom, given all of the sections and specific amount of space.
My first thought of my project was do a book or a keynote introducing C5 and my experiences but i have said before its more than just an experience. I have concluded that adding on to the book or keynote, one of the projects tht i could possibly do id to design my own classroom, create a name for my school and form my own curriculum/ mission statement and lastly, an itenerary with the daily activity. I think this allows me to take my journey of persuing my career to the next level, as well as Work Place Learning Experience.
I have been thinking about Essential Questions and themes that could help me accomplish my goal. I have been thinking about what i want to gain out of this experience and how i will bring those those thoughts to life. Some of the Questions i have had in mind are: How can i create a better learning enviroment for the children to learn more efficiently? How can i form a curriculum that actually inhances the minds of kids so that they can be mentally and physically Healthy? Overtime i will be thinking about more themes and essential questions, but periodically i will be checking in with my mentor and academic seminar teacher(KC), in order to get help that may be needed.
throughout my encounters so far, i've been working with the children, mostly getting to know them better and know what they do on a regular basis. sometimes, i help out the teachers carry out the small activities like arts and crafts and outdoor activities. today, i helped out the teachers with running the activity and the kids were making easter eggs. after the teacher explained what the instructions were, we started to make the eggs. there were blue dyes, purple dyes, and green dyes and i was the teacher in charge of the blue dye. the kids were really excited about dying the egg but i had to calm them down to tell them that they had to do it one at a time since they couldn't touch the dye or else they would be dyed blue, like the blue man group. after this activity, i learned that kids are very eager to do things that they enjoy and things that they don't enjoy, they don't really bother to do a good job on it.
For my WLE project, i plan on doing an arts and crafts project with chalk because i observed the kids do a lot of activities and the seem to like arts and crafts the most. even during outdoor playtime, they would always take a piece of chalk and draw all over the place on the ground. so after i learned abut that, i decided to take this idea and have each kid draw depending on what the week's theme is and each kid will draw on one ground tile and i will take the pictures of them to hand up or give to the parents.
I'm not sure about what theme this project will be because i'm still thinking about what to base this project on depending on what the theme of the week is so ill be updating about this soon.
So far in my WLE, I have been the one who has been doing the tedious, but also important tasks of the organization. I have been organizing folders where Becky would use to take to meetings and share to all the folks who seem iunterested in DonorsChoose.org. I have also saved Kelly a lot of time by doing this instead of her. I have also been doing most of the tedious work of Donor Apprication Day. I picked out most of the photos which would be used to put into cards that would be sent to donors. Then I put most of the pictures into cards as well as putting them into envelops. Next I put stamps and return labels on the envelops before finally sealing it with this sponge water bottle thing. It was way better than using my tongue. Then I created the cards by sticking the glue dots with gift certificates into the cards. I have done a lot of work which would otherwise waste a lot of valuable time when Kelly or Becky can be using to do more productive work in business or conferences/ paperwork.
My project for my WLE project would be a marketing report in which I write out all the steps that everyone took in order to finish the process. I would have to include samples of materials, budgets, and process as well as many more parts of the event. Then I would send an e-mail descibing my experiences with DonorsChoose.org to the many recipients and reminding them to use their gift certificates before they expire.
I would say the essential theme that would bring my project altogether for my workplace learning would be How can one person change many people's world? I think the main theme of my internship so far would have to be every person can help change the world one step at a time.
Every day I come into my job and start working at 8:00 since my mentor comes in at 9:30 I go into my mother's room where I help her get ready for the kids parents to drop them off. In the room I help the kids get their toys out, I help prepare and retrieve breakfast, and I also make sure the kids don't climb on the tables or hit each other with anything, I basically make sure they don't get injured or put in danger. When my mentor come I help Kelly (she works in the office) with the sysco order in this task I run milk and other food products to all 6 of the classes. after all the food is delivered I break down the boxes and place them in the trash. After this I go to the office where my mentor Molly is and I recieve new tasks from her until lunch, then I go back to the office in case I don't have a task already set out for me and recieve a new job to do.
The focus of my project will be how children's village is affecting the kids that go there and how its preparing them for life(maybe this can be modified)
So far, I have been doing a lot of work in what my mentor calls the blue room. It is one of the booths. All of the sound engineers work is done in here or the yellow room( which is the same thing just on the other side of the studio). The blue room was in pretty bad condition before I came and now it is almost ready for use. What I’ve had to do so far is connect all the equipment and install all the software on the computer. We are using and extremely old system that is running off of OS 9. So far this is my main project, there is still a lot to do to finish up the room completely, but for now the system is almost ready to use. Besides doing this I have been working on completing the entire studio. It was about 95% built when I came in and started working and I am trying to help them make that last 5%, it was hard for them to do so while they were just starting up and they were really busy. I have mostly been building various things and putting things together to help everything run smoother. So far I would say the theme of working at my WLE is to learn something you just have to dive right in and try it instead of just reading about it and learning something in theory.
what im doing so far is watching over the kids or playing with them. i find it fun because im learning how to engage with kids at different ages and i feel this will be good for later in life because i will remember what i did here in my wle that workied so i can use some when i have kids. they teach me not to say no to them and how to talk to them without them crying and so that they both get what they want even if they are fighting over it.
my work isnt necesarily essential to the bigger picture but it is definitely part of it. I went to visit the Bravado headquarters in oakland, where i was told all about the process. There are lots of designers that bravado has that they can call to complete a design. they have some that they trust with big things like coming up with a complete design from scratch or designing for big clients, and ones that are trusted less who do more manual simple designs that are clearly laid out. i am basically at the very bottom of this group, as i am an inexperienced intern. even so , my designs could potentially earn them lots of money. there are many other parts of the business, there are people who deal completely with ordering, completely with the bands, they need to keep an eye on the fashion of the day so that they can figure out which colors and what kinds of designs will be the big sellers. it is a very complicated business, and i am a very, very small part of it.
So far I've done a large assortment of tasks. Stripping computers of useful parts, organization, breaking down boxes, testing hard drives and so on. All of it has prepared me well for the final project that I plan to do. My final project is to build a computer into a television enclosure, this takes technical skill as well as creativity and organization all of which I've done tasks involving during the WLE. We are going to record the process of creating the computer with video and pictures and then use the documentation to create a funny yet informative movie about our final project.
**CONTINUED LATER, CLASS ENDING**
Well the work that I have been doing is very repetitive. When my academic seminar teacher came I was actually doing something different. The main work that I have been doing is entering files into the databases, filing, fixing files and sending papers around. The files I have entering into the computer databases are the misdemeanors. For this I enter in the person's name, there case number, the box number, the date, the destroy date, and etc. It's very easy, but the only challenge with this is staying focused because it can get boring after awhile typing in the same format over and over again. The filing that I do is mainly in the conference room, this is not all the time though because there are rarely bench warrants that need to be filed when I'm there on Wednesdays. Basically its self explanatory how you have to file those you just go by last name. Also another thing that I do is fix files. I do this in the record room. Basically when I fix a file I put the smaller file in this thing in which they call a "jacket", which is just a big folder, This is really easy, but there are a few downsides about this is that there seems like there is millions of files and the second thing is you get paper cuts and last but not least your hands tend to get really ashy. The papers I send around are calendars. These are not regular calendars, they are confusing looking calendars. I don't even know why they are called calendars because for all I'm concerned to me they are not calendars at all, that's just a fancy name for them. I do a lot of other things but that's just an overview of some of the things that I do on a WLE day. These tasks that I do benefit my worksite because it creates less work for my mentor. It’s also makes it easier for them to access files, and I feel like it takes a load of stress off of them and allows them to get more important things done that day.
I actually have decided on a project. Something that I have come up with is that I want to create a PSA about the criminal justice system. I want to show the comparison between jails vs. schooling. Basically I want to show youth that when they start to drop out of school, then they are most likely headed down the wrong path and are going to be incarcerated, but if t hey stay in school and get educated then they have a lower percent of being locked up and a higher percentage of making something of themselves. I'm also going to incorporate a program called "back on track," which focuses on giving young adults that got off track maybe in high school and are locked up a second chance to do right again and get right back on track. My audience is going to be youth, mainly at CAT because that’s where it's going to be displayed. I don't really know of a theme that can bring my project together, but if I'm not mistaken I think my theme is the "back on track" program.
So far at my WLE I have worked on so many different things at the bakery from crumb coating cakes which is this step in the process of decorating a cakes where when your done filling a cake you cover it with frosting that’s a little watered down so that its easier to spread around the cake, and you do this so that when you frost the cake the crumbs are already trapped with that coating of frosting that has already been put on, its almost like a primer. I’ve also worked with coloring frosting in other words making the color they need and that entails a lot of caution because you don’t want to add to much color because it can turn either too dark to light or to bright. And what was really cool was I got to paint a dragon on a cake with edible paint and it was gold it was really cool. I’ve got to practice my decorating on the side and have been working on some simple designs and am slowly getting better. I have also learned how to take orders and handle customers. One of the things my mentor has done for me that I was really happy about and appreciated a lot was that she invited me to go to a cake decorating class so I could get more experience with decorating. Everything I have done has been of some kind of help to the business, and everything I've done has revolved around my future life in the business. I'm not sure what I will be doing as my WLE project but my mentor and I are talking still about what we are going to come up with as my project. Decorating I think is the key to my project because it is what I've been focusing on the most and I've redirected my path from the business aspect to the art and design and technique of cake decorating cake form.
So far in my WLE I have only gone to the tip of the ice berg as far as the work that goes on in the job place. Thus far I have done a lot of stripping-and-scrapping computers, rearranging electronics, organization, and bird watching. We have mostly been in the back end of the production line, or so it were, as far as we have been working with the to-be recycled computers that have been fixed or left by customers because they were considered useless, we haven't done any work with the customers or with the other employees yet, but were working up to that. Overall my work experience so far has been a very nice one, and we even have an idea for a final project which we discussed with you KC Jones.
