Philosophy and/or purpose of the organization: Chibi-Chan Preschool founded in 1989 and is a program created by JCYC, which is the Japanese Youth Council which provides child and youth development services to the community of San Francisco. JCYC was founded in 1969 by a group of Japanese American Youth who wanted to share and discuss issues that would impact the young people of the future. Chibi-Chan is a preschool that offers a place for children from age 2-5 years old, which establishes a community for the children here to have fun and learn at the same time. Chibi-Chan has a curriculum that teaches children through many hands-on activities to help them with the development of cognitive, social, emotional and physical readiness skills.
How is Chibi-Chan funded: Chibi-Chan is a private pre-school, it is tuition based, private grants, city grants, and school fundraising.
Major Changes in Company History: Changes that happened during Chibi-Chan’s time was only starting to have more age groups because it started out as 1 grade pre-school and after that, it started to have another grade and in the end, it has 3 classrooms, the oldest age group which is called the astronauts from age 4-5, butterfly from age 3-4, and the caterpillars from age 2-3.
How is it Run and Organized: Chibi-Chan is run by a director named Shana Kanzaki. Chibi-Chan is an extension to the services provided by the Japanese Community Youth Council(JCYC). Chibi-Chan is a Pre-school for children from ages 2-5 with teachers who help them get prepared for kindergarten.
What does the organization do for others and themselves: Chibi-Chan provides childcare for children from the age of 2-5 to show them right from wrong, how to read, the alphabet, current events going on in the world today, and much more because of the endless possibilities that a child can learn. From doing this, it can make JCYC have more of a name than it already is to show the youth the daily things in life that are right from wrong.
Approximately how many people work at this organization and/or benefit from its programs: Chibi-Chan has approximately 15 people who work there. What is the organization’s physical building is like: Chibi-Chan is located within the Rose Court and it was renovated to meet the needs of a pre-school that has classrooms, a closed outdoor playground, small bathrooms, and changing tables that are all for the children that atten Chibi-Chan.
What part of San Francisco is it located in, and how does that affect the organization: Chibi-Chan is located in the Western Edition and it’s between Pine & Pierce St. It’s an easy to get to location because of all the Muni that run near it and the abundant amount of parking that guests can park in and it’s a nice neighborhood.
The purpose of my organization is to provide the best in early care and education for children between the ages of three months up to the age of five years old. While providing support to the whole family through parent education, community building opprotunities, resource and referal, and monthly social gatherings(culture events) this happens every month on the last friday in the month.
Children's Village is funded through tuition fees paid through by private pay parebnts and government subsidies. Children's Village also recieves funding from first five California and the infant toddler sustaining grant. Another company that funds them is the HAAS foundation, city department of children youth&their families, fedeeral food pprogram, and last but not least Catholic Charities fundraising.
The only major change Children's Village ever had was a little over three years ago when my mentor Molly Skuse became the new program director this type of change is leadership change because she bacame the director for this organization.
This program is organized and ran by Catholic Charities CYO. This program benefits working families there for it benefits all of San Francisco. I think with out an organization like this many people wouldn't be able to go to work with out their kids being supervised and what not. It also provides for many underserved populations.
Here at Children's Village there are 30 staff members on site. (Molly Skuse) program director, (Claire) program administrator, (Dana, Dedrea, and Sherri) these three woman are the head teachers here at Children's Village. (Kelly) she is the family support cordinator, (Freddy) he is the inclusions specialist. There are 18 classroom teachers out of the 30. There are three floating subs that basically help out in clasrooms when their short of staff or just need help. There is also a parent advisory group that handles such things as (department of public health, Day Care consultants,Raising a reader(helping the kids here get more involved with reading books..the book mobile makes stops here as well), Head start, Kid space which is occupational theropy, and pre-school for all.
The Children's Village building is in a dense urban setting, the building is in the shape of an L. This building has been up since the late 1960's. This building consists of seven classrooms, three enclosed offices, one large resource room, an lobby reception area, staff kitchen, a laundry/storage room(Limited Space!), a ten car parking lot, three large play yards, threw the whole building there are many different types of plants(cactuses, strawberry bush, and various trees) Childrens Village is filled with plant life as well as animal life(turtles, fish, and birds) and on top of all of this it is located in a very sunny area here downtown.
Children's Village resides in the south of market district, its convient to downtown workplaces as well as social service programs and vocationl training. Families come from all through out the bay area
Community Musician: Placement State Profile Community Musician works with many different aspects of music, if you are looking to product a CD they can do all the aspects for your. You can record, edit and mix your album there first. Once you have all the tracks for your album down you can use community musician to develop a CD cover and booklet for you with their graphic design department. They will then produce your CD and replicate or burn it it. After they produce and replicate/burn it they can duplicate them for you. They can do any of these steps for you at any time depending on what you need. If you just want CD duplication, they will do it for you and put your CD on iTunes and other online CD stores. The companies makes it money by doing these things for you. They are funded with the customers money, just like any other Recording Studio or CD/DVD replication/duplication company out there. All of the money comes from the customers paying for the service or product. Community Musician didn’t always be able to do all these things for you and it wasn’t always run quite the same way. The building they used to run out of was in a different spot. These new building was chosen because it was bigger and they needed a bigger space for the completely new recording studio they were adding to the company. They added this recording studio to expand what they could do for the costumers. When adding the studio they also added two new employees, one being my mentor, Adam Rossi and the other Johannes Luley. These people were the two new sound engineers that produced all the music. Community Musician not only records audio, but they also Edit and Mix the tracks to make them sound exactly how you want them to sound. At community musician its always about what the customer wants. This new recording studio started to make the company make more money and have its name put out in the world. Since they have had their new recording studio and new buildings they have produced many albums and replicated and duplicated many more cds then before. There are 5 people that work for community musician. There are the three people who I walk in every Wednesday and see. There is one graphic designer who makes the CD covers and CD booklets. There is another person who deals with the pressing company and burns the CDs and actually gets the CDs produced. He is the middle man between the artists and the companies that physically make the CD. The last person I see everyday is my mentor, who is one of the sound engineers. He record, Mixes, Edits, and masters music. Whenever he is not working with me is he working in the studio mixing, editing, or recording a song. Two other people, the owner of the company, who I have never met and is hands off, and I know very little of what he actually does. The last person who works at community musician is the other sound engineer who comes up to San Francisco about once and month and usually lives in LA. I have met him once, and is a well recognized sound engineer. Community Musician has replicated, duplicated, and pressed to many CDs and bands to count. They have been doing it for a while and they are always on the phone or on the email dealing with clients trying to figure out what the client wants. They have also done graphic work for many Artists as well. To many to count, again they have been doing it for a while and they have done it many times. They have produced about 5 full albums so far at community musician, but have recorded other artists. They have also mixed or master other tracks that have not been made into an album that was completed produced by community musician. The physical appearance isn’t that much from the outside, it is right off bayshore ave. and is not in the best neighborhood. It is right in between two auto body shops and looks kind of out of place. This doesn’t affect it that much, people still come from all over California to get their music recorded. The graphic design and CD replicated/duplication can be done from anywhere the location does not affect it at all. The inside of the office is very nice. The lounge area in the front is very modern, with a small kitchen and a big flat screen TV. The two booths and the studio were all pretty much hand built by the employees at community musician and are not completely done yet. This is very unnoticeable, you would think the place was made to be a recording studio. The fact that it is a recording studio in the middle of two auto body shops doesn’t matter, the rooms inside the building are very well sound proofed. Community Musician is a newer company that is just starting up and doing very well in the music industry.
The philosophy and purpose of the organization I am currently doing my workplace learning experience is to help the community be a better place and have all human beings help each other. At DonorsChoose.org, the main purpose is to help poor schools by creating a website that helps fund teachers that need supplies, but their schools can not afford to buy any of the demanded supplies. DonorsChoose.org is also about trying to get people involved with helping people and involved with the community. DonorsChoose.org is funded in two ways. The first and biggest way the organization is funded is through big supporters. There are many big name companies that give grants to DonorsChoose.org like Ebay, Yahoo, Lehman Brothers Bank, and many others. The second way DonorsChoose.org is funded is by individuals supporting the organization. When donating to teachers for their projects online, there is an optional fulfillment fee which donates 15% of the donation to support the organization. The organization went through a major change last fall when DonorsChoose.org launched globally instead of just serving the Bay Area. DonorsChoose.org raised 14 million for the 5 year expansion. In the last couple of years, DonorsChoose.org has added a CFO who came from Aduable, CTO who came from Microsoft, and a director of consumer marketing from American Express. The organization is run by the headquarters in New York. It has executive teams throughout the country to be in charge of one region instead of New York being in charge of an entire country. There are six regional offices. Each office has a executive that leads the team. DonorsChoose.org runs for the purpose of helping kids that live in high poverty rates. DonorsChoose.org is a website that enables donors of all kind throughout the world to donate to kids in any school they like. The website is set up so teachers write up something they need and let donors give them money. Once a request is fulfilled, the items will be bought and sent to the teachers. The donors will receive a “thank you” packet in return for being so generous and giving. Many people are benefited from this organization. There are 55 employees across the country working for DonorsChoose.org. about 40,000 teachers and around one million students benefit from the program DonorsChoose.org is running. As of today, 20 million dollars have been donated to students through DonorsChoose.org’s program. As well as 80% of all the projects that has been funded by the generous people are in high poverty schools. The organizations building here in San Francisco is located in central downtown. This helps its employee’s easy access to work because of the many bus lines that run downtown as well as the freeways. This also helps the organization when travelers come to visit because it’s so easy to access in many ways. The office in San Francisco is a really small building with two rooms. There is one big room where all the employees work at their desks. Each employee has a separate desk so everyone can do work at one time. The back room is for storage of envelops and other various sources of heavily needed office material. As of now, I work in the back room making it my own personal office. It isn’t that bad because there is still plenty of room for me to do work. There is about 5 small windows in the entire building making things really hot when it shouldn’t usually be. However small the San Francisco building is, the building in New York is much bigger. It is more of a warehouse type of office in New York.
C5 Philosophy: Our mission is to facilitate young children's optimal development and learning in a safe, supportive, and enriched environment.
Our primary goal is to provide and continuously improve child development and education services of the highest quality in a climate of care and respect for children and their families. We offer a program that places an emphasis on developing strong relationships between children, staff members, parents, and families.
Our staff facilitates individual and group development by providing stimulating learning experiences and environments that foster physical growth, emotional well-being, social relationships, creativity, and intellectual development.
The daily activities are guided by qualified teachers and are carefully coordinated to be appropriate for each child's age and developmental levels. The infants and toddlers receive concentrated nurturing and care combined with daily attention to individual and small group activities that focus on sensory, physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development. The older toddlers and preschool children experience a blend of arts, crafts, dance, music, storytelling, dramatic play, language development, math, science, photography, and exploring the city environment and Nature.
Sensitivities, skills, insights, and knowledge are built from children's marvelous ability to continually pursue their individual interests and to creatively explore and express themselves. Both centers are equipped with a wide variety of learning materials and play equipment that support all areas of your child's development.
We invite all children, parents, and staff to apply, regardless of their gender, race, color, religion, creed, sexual orientation, nationality, or ethnic origin. According to our organization's charter, we give priority to enrolling children of California State Employees.
We practice an approach that is inspired in part by the infant-toddler and preschool programs in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and we rely in part on the offerings of the Far West Laboratory for Educational Research and Development, now called WestEd. In addition, there are many outstanding methods, models, individuals, and concepts that influence our program and our staff in their work. For additional information on the philosophy and practice of the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy, see the independent Website http://www.reggioinspired.com.
Our program emphasizes building strong interpersonal relationships and views all children as competent, creative, and powerful beings. Our methods and activities result in comprehensive learning. Our teaching strategies reinforce an emergent curriculum with a rich materials environment, varied groupings of children, and enhanced individual learning for every child. Your child will have access to many resources in their classroom, Center, building, and throughout the program and surrounding community.
In all aspects of our organization, we maintain the characteristics of continuously learning and improving; where the atmosphere is joyful, exciting, caring, aesthetic, compelling, and rich with creativity, surprises, and the promise of great potential.
When your child is enrolled in the program, they are assigned to a primary teacher and a small learning group. Your child's primary teacher is also part of a teaching team that works with your child and others in your child's age group. The other team members will some times work with your child in place of the primary teacher. The children also regularly mix with other groups to augment their learning and development. Most children develop and learn best when they socialize and learn with their peers and adults in addition to their parents and other family members.
In addition, your child's designated primary teacher and age group teaching team are part of a larger Center and Program-wide teaching and child development team. It includes many people on staff and some people who are outside resources to the program. These people include individuals, such as lead teachers; Center Directors; the program's Executive Director; consultants and specialists in child development and education; various support staff at the Centers; and, parents and other volunteers who contribute to the program.
Our program provides a continuous and seamless progression of learning, child development, and nurturing for your child from their infancy through their toddler ages and preschool years to their entry into kindergarten. There is a carefully thought-out and facilitated transition between each age group.
We make every effort to provide a comprehensive and exemplary program for you and your child during her or his earliest years.
Bethel Christian Church is a non-denominational church that seeks to serve the city of San Francisco by educating members about God through the teachings of the Bible. The church is also involved in many outreach projects including world missions, feeding the homeless, and re-habilitation programs.
How is it funded?
The church is funded by tithes and offerings from the congregation. Opportunities to donate money to the church are given during church services, Sunday school, and other church events. Various outreach projects are funded also through community fundraisers.
Major Changes in Organization History:
The church’s change in name from Bethel Temple to Bethel Christian Church marked a turning point for the church. People began to recognize its Christian notation, which brought less confusion to those who associated the word “temple” with other religions. The building in which Bethel now lives did not start out the way it is now. The church building was much smaller, and there was only one floor. Church services were held in what is now called the Fellowship Hall, which is located on the bottom floor. With much financial and physical support from the congregation, the site began to grow. Today stands a four-floor facility complete with a sanctuary, fellowship hall, lobby/narthex, green room, kitchen, parking garage, nursery, office and Sunday school classrooms. All of this would not have been possible without the donations and helping hands of the community at Bethel.
How is it run and organized?:
The church is run on an Elder system. There are a board of elders who make the major decisions, such as who to hire on staff and where the money is spent. Elders are elected after they have become official members of the church and have taken the required course(s) in order to be placed in an Elder position.
What does the organization do for others? Themselves?
Bethel Christian Church is involved in local and global ministries. It sends out short-term mission teams to countries like Mexico, Nicaragua, Brazil, and Kenya. It also supports long-term/lifetime missionaries in these and other countries. Locally, the church supports organizations like Teen Challenge and Alpha Pregnancy Center. Once a week, lunch is served to the homeless in the area and the church’s thrift store “Second Time Around” is open a few days a week. Among these ministries, Bethel provides a place for youth to go on Friday nights, which helps keep kids off the streets.
Approximately how many people work at this organization and/or benefit from its programs?
About a thousand people work at/attend Bethel Christian Church.
What is the organization’s physical building like?
Bethel’s building is fairly large. The main sanctuary seats about a thousand people, while the Fellowship Hall seats 200 people. There are also many classrooms, offices, a garage, as well as other rooms around the church.
What part of San Francisco is it located in, and how does that affect the organization?
The church is located in the Mission district on the corner of 24th and Valencia. It serves many people from the Mission and Noe Valley districts but also hosts church goers from all around the Bay Area.
Placement Site Profile: What is the philosophy and/or purpose of the organization: Castro Computer Services is a computer repair, service, and custom build business located at 25th and Castro street. CCS’s purpose is to provide easy, fast, and customer friendly services to a wide range of people. It is generally a local business; people who live near to the site are the main source of clientele rather than the whole city. The philosophy of CCS is to get work done quickly and have a good time doing it, to provide a great working environment to employees and customers alike. How is it funded: CCS is funded like most small businesses, by it’s sales. The main income of CCS is repairing computers, and, if the computer is not repairable or costs too much, the customer has the option to keep repairing it or to replace it with a new custom built PC that CCS builds for them, and then recycles their old computer for free. Has the organization had any major changes in it’s history: None that I know about, I don’t think it’s old enough to have much of a history behind it, new employees of course but beyond that nothing I can think about. How is it run and organized: It is run by the owner, Raj, and organized by both him and my mentor Susan. It is run very well, even if hasty sometimes, and the organization is very nice, with everything labeled in bins for it’s specific parts and situated in easily accessible areas. What does the organization do for others: It provides easy to use and find computer repair to the Castro/Noe Valley neighborhood. It helps people out people who don’t have enough to pay and genuinely cares about the customers that come in and require help. They even do house calls if a customer requires it and they seem to flex a lot for customers who need it. Approximately how many work here or benefit from it’s programs: On Wednesdays there are generally four employees working, Raj, Will, Mike, and Susan. All of the customers benefit from the “programs” by having their computers repaired effectively and completely, so hundreds benefit. What is the organizations physical building like: The building is a small storefront on the corner of 25th and Castro street, it is split into several rooms, storefront, office, work space (About 30x30 room), server room (7x20) back storage (20x20), kitchen, blower room, and bathroom. It looks like it was an old apartment or house, the shower is intact adjacent to the kitchen, but has been turned into the compressed air blower room, there is a full kitchen and the bathroom has a homely feel to it, it looks like the front 2/3 rooms just had the walls knocked down to create the front store/work spaces. What part of San Francisco is it located in, and how does that effect the organization: It is located on the corner of 25th and Castro, this effects the business because of the people who live in the neighborhood, different kinds of people change the way the business works out. For instance there is a person who owns the house next to CCS and they allow CCS to use their garage, hose, and space for storage in the garage if necessary, he’s like a friend of the company and it helps wonders when they need anything that people know them and are personal and friendly with them. One guy who owns the subs shop down the street on 24th and Castro goes in there all the time to print, type, and get general computer help and usage and because of that everybody who works at CCS gets a 50% subs discount, which is a perfect example of how a small business can benefit from the community around it.

C5 Philosophy:
Our mission is to facilitate young children's optimal development and learning in a safe, supportive, and enriched environment.
Organization Name: Bethel Christian Church
Philosophy and/or purpose of the organization :
Placement Site Profile:
What is the philosophy and/or purpose of the organization: Castro Computer Services is a computer repair, service, and custom build business located at 25th and Castro street.
